Solids Only

A MQG fabric challenge using several of Windham's Ruby+Bee's solids looked interesting to me, so I bought the fabrics. And now I've used EQ8 to design myself a quilt to make using them. I think this is the first time I'm attempting this, so I hope the program did the calculations for all the sizes, etc. correctly.

They're pictured above, minus the print on the bottom of the stack. That dark blue is Really Really dark.

But so far, I hadn't yet gotten up the gumption to start cutting into the fabric yet. It's on this month's list, so here goes.

I've finally begun the cutting today, gulp. So far, I've done all the math and cut out the vanilla custard, mandarin and russet fabric pieces.

I haven't cut out the three blue fabrics yet, but here's how a part of the layout will look. The blank triangle spots are where the various blues will go. I like the fabrics a lot so far, they have a nice hand and cut nicely without a lot of powdering but then I haven't started them sewing yet.

 

New Challenge

 

There's a MQG challenge that interested me, it involves using a palette of solids that Chawne Kimber chose from the Windham's Ruby+Bee. I decided that I liked the colors and the idea of designing and making a quilt in all solids which I haven't ever done. I had to hunt around to find the colors and ended up buying them from The French Seam and Hawthorne Supply.

The names of the colors are evocative: Russet, Mandarin, Vanilla Custard, Pool, Cornflower, Stormy. The fabric has a lovely hand, and washed up without any excess dye release.

Of course when one is on fabric supplier websites, other purchases tend to happen although I tried to limit it. Grey swirly fabric from Paula Nadelstern, and two pieces from a recent Halloween themed Alice in Wonderland.

And more fusible batting from Hancocks of Paducah, so I don't have to do the spraying thing, even though it works well, the fusible batting is easier.

Fabric Surprise

I received a mysterious package from Michael Miller Fabrics recently. No paper with information inside the package, just two pieces of fabric tied up in a bow. I was completely mystified until I went to post about it on Instagram and saw something about the Michael Miller Challenge for the Modern Quilt Guild. I'd signed up for it and completely forgotten!

So now I have this really nice fabric, (seriously the hand of it is lovely) to design a quilt around. It has to all be made with Michael Miller fabrics, even the back and binding, so I'll probably have to find some more to make a big enough quilt. I really do like the colors that I was gifted with, so that's a good starting point. The print is a very nice and I can already imagine a lot of possibilities to utilize the lines and shading in the design.
