Peace For Ukraine

The Peace for Ukraine block from Happy Sew Lucky is what I'm working on today as I listen to news reports. 

As an unimportant aside: Oh my goodness looking at this picture that I took of my laptop screen, I really need to clean it! I got wax smears on it the other day when I was doing my hand therapy wax soak. Talk about 1st world or unimportant problems, huh? But looking at the picture of a picture of the screen it makes it doubly bad. But obviously not war happening in your country bad of course.

I know that my making this block isn't going to help anyone or do anything about this stupid war, but as the quilt block designer requested in lieu of payment to her, I am also donating to USA for UNCHCR which is setting up the border refugee camps. This is instead of checking twitter for the millionth time for the latest news and crying over videos of entire towns standing in the road to block Russian tanks from rolling through. 

What a horrible horrible thing war is.

War, What is it Good for?

Gerrie's got a great collection of photos going over on Flickr, of this bumper sticker on cars, houses (including the White House), and people. I was really glad to see the Dems make the Repubs stay up all night to explain themselves earlier this week. It seems the smallest sacrifice they could make before taking the month of August off on vacation (must be nice, huh?!). I don't know why they're sticking with this failed presidency to prolong this unjust and unnecessary war. Hopefully enough voters in America are paying attention and have long enough memories (til the next election!).

And then the Dave Matthew's Band is trying to get people to pay attention to what happens to the veterans of our wars once they arrive back home. They have a petition on their website that they plan to send to the Secretary of Defense.

And Still Counting has come up with a great idea for an quilt exhibit about the Iraq war. Go check it out and join in if you are so inclined. It will involve small quilts (6" ) representing US dead, with french knots representing Iraqi dead.


She was inspired by a recent display at Reed College that had little flags representing Iraqis and US deaths. One group is red, one is white. It is quite a stark sight this image, especially the long shots, where all you can see is a lawn full of white. Guess which group is which color?
