Sunday Funghi

 

The title kinda rhymes, at least enough for a Sunday morning. This photo was taken on our street on one of our many dog walks this week. I believe this is a Pine Bracket, or something similar. It's not functionally good for the tree, and tends to make a home on older trees. 

The PG&E tree trimmers were on our street, this is the madrone they cut up and left behind. I really like the colors of the bark, and underbark and bright green leaf for comparison.

Sometimes, The Tree Is Orange

 And then sometimes,
the tree in front of you
is orange.

Fitting In With Fungus

Two great examples of fungus from our trip to Tuolumne, not sure of names, but they are very photogenic aren't they? It is always fun to come upon something like this growing among all the beautiful wildflowers, they're so different in character.

Oh and I didn't knock over the one below, we found it like that, I swear!
See, I match! This is me on a six mile hike on the John Muir Trail (probably the easiest part of it), but still, six miles for someone who is basically housebound, not so bad. Towards the end on the way back I was wondering why I'd done it, but I was glad to have gotten out there and seen the meadows and the river and rocks. And having a day to recover while riding back home in the car was a pretty good plan.

Fun With Funghi

I'm not sure why, but these three large mushrooms were growing in my strawberry bed. Yes, I have been watering it, so it hasn't gotten very dry, so that is the how. It has to be pretty moist for mushrooms to grow, and this grew to a quite impressive size. And I'm guessing that there were some mushroom spores in the organic mulch that I just purchased and put on the top of the soil in that garden bed. That is all you need apparently, for freebie, free-loader mushrooms.

I was tempted to try eating one, but my son Alex talked me out of it in case they were poisonous. I told him I guessed I was too much of a Hobbit at heart(who are of course renowned for liking to forage for mushrooms and eat them!). Glad to know there is someone around here who is sensible!

I hope more grow so I can make some spore prints, unfortunately these were already mixed in with the coffee grounds in the compost bag so they weren't retrievable when I found out about spore prints.
