Corrected Orange

 

After fooling around with choosing the Temperature Quilt fabric choices for the hotter temperatures, I realized I had two pieces in the already pieced April column that were now incorrect. They should be actual orange not yellow-orange nearly orange.

I could have just un-sewed a few seams, and replaced the pieces with orange fabric but I wanted to see if I could change the almost orange not quite yellow-orange in situ. Laziness or curiosity or some combination of both I suppose.

Time to pull out the ink, as in the Tsukineko ink and give it a try.

On the left are the cut out dyed orange fabric shapes and on the right are some of the dyed yellow-orange  fabric over-inked with the orange Tsukineko ink.

One of my studio assistants, LeeLoo thought I was being quite silly and should have just replaced the pieces. 

I over-inked the two pieces right there up on the design wall and I think it turned out great. 

Closer up, you can see them in the pieced column on the left. On the right in the un-pieced column is the orange dyed fabric I'm using from here on out for the year.

Choosing Orange

Proceeding along cutting out 10" squares for the Orange Bullseye Project. I laid them all out to take a picture and realized I hadn't followed one of our main rules for fabric choices: No prints with lots of white. Whoops! They really do jump out at you and take over in this sort of project. 

Also, that print on the lower right is not brown, it's a dark bricky orange, with also too much white, so it's out of there. And the stripe-y batik is out too. I'm so so on the floral with the dark centers for now they stay in.

Those got pulled out, and now it's a lot better. I cut a second piece out of all the fabrics that had enough left. It turns out I have a lot of oranges, but I've been using them (see Safe At Home) lately, so they're in bits and pieces and not in sizes that I am able to cut a 10" square out of.

 Found a few more fabrics that worked, I'm liking the variety of dark medium and light. But now I'm noticing in this picture, wow, do a couple of them ever look yellow. In person it looks fine though, definitely on the more yellow side of yellow-orange, but not this yellow. I think this goes back to the age-old problem with cameras having trouble translating the red that is in anything correctly as far as our eyesight goes, it never matches. 

Still not enough, not even close to have enough for 48 squares, so I'm going shopping!

Sometimes, The Tree Is Orange

 And then sometimes,
the tree in front of you
is orange.

Atomic Pillowz Program Expanded

More pillows needed to be converted into Atomic Pillowz. Alarming Orange was called for, so into the 70's bin I dove:

No, I chickened out and didn't use this. I just didn't think I could bear to look at it every day in my studio. But what is it for? Why do I still have it? Should I use the "quilting" stitches as a guide and actually do what the fabric says to??? Don't you hate such bossy fabric?!

A bandana-ish print in a very strange orange brown, do not adjust your monitor, it really is that color! And yes, I used it in a pillow, along with some intense gold cordoroy.

No no no. I did not use this knit! Isn't it fabulous though? Soon to be part of a doll, I think the legs would be best.

After all this auditioning of fabrics, several more pillows have been covered in combinations of new and old fabrics. All in the atomic pillowz series, they make for a fluffy spot to sit and bead on my quilts by the window.

Two of them are using fabrics that didn't make it into the final design for Lunaea's curtain so she gave them to me. Thanks Lunaea! This one above has the handprinted sad eyes fabric that I printed a while ago in the center, surrounded by the freebie strips of fabric Lunaea got from the nice lady at Judy's Sewing.
