Dog Damage

 

The quilted chuppah I made for my SIL and BIL way back in 2004 remains in a chewed-up state. I took a couple more pictures of the dog damage (puppy chewing issue that's now over) and am noodling on how to repair this. I just looked it up and I did the same thing and wrote about it here last year around the same time. So yes it is time to actually do something about it as it looks quite sad. 

The damage involves one corner, where the binding around one corner is gone (I hope it was tasty!).  I think that I could just make a new section of binding and kinda curve the corner a bit. It doesn't hang completely straight so I think it wouldn't be super noticeable that the corner is no longer "square."

This damage is a bit harder to fix. I think that I could make an insert quilted piece that would fit, maybe satin stitch it into place. And perhaps stitch in the words "Ginger Was Here". And then I could replace that bit of binding that's missing.

I don't want to take it away and bring it back to them, so I need to make the binding at home, and when I'm over at their place the next time, just hand stitch it on. The missing chunk will be the harder part to accomplish, they do have a sewing machine, so maybe I could take it down from the wall and get the chunk replacement sewn in securely. I guess it wouldn't be too bad to hand stitch it on, it's not like it's getting washed every week. But first I have to find some of the dyed fabric to use or dye some that'd be close.

Just to note that I'm not mad about it, not at all, they have it hanging up in their living room after all. The bottom edge was formerly just below the top of a couch which hid the damage. It was only noticed when they moved the furniture. This is just the real-world damage that happens to quilted pieces that are being used out in the real world and not rolled up in storage in my closet.

Still In The Village

It may seem like I'm a little stuck on this Village quilt. But the assembly of these blocks takes up a lot of. table space, so I want to get through it while I'm working on it.

 Owl house? Or maybe not. 

The pieces for the rest of the blocks are all cut out, except for the "sky" triangles. A bit more sewing left to do on this one.

Almost Nine

Almost nine rows of houses are made for the Village quilt. Two more to go. Wow that last row is quite dark. I think I'm going to swap out the blue dividers and just use the grey. Two rows of transition is probably enough. I have to cut new background pieces and I might just stay with the grey the rest of the way.

Village Work

It's chimney time in the Village, I almost forgot to make some "sky" backgrounds with chimneys. I’m trying to have at least a few of them per row of houses.

Here's an assembly plan photo, aka how the heck I keep track of which window, door and house sides go with which roofs.

Watching the SF Giants while trimming roof pieces, I ended up sewing for almost an entire game, got into the zone.

Where I'm at with house construction, setting them up in the rows. I'm making a bunch more houses and then spending some effort on arranging the houses nicely before I sew them together. It will likely end up being about 11 or 12 rows.

And two more in-process pictures. It's fun to swap the bits around until there's a house that "makes sense" visually to me.

It had been a long time between doing all the fussy cutting of the pieces and sewing them together, and I keep getting surprised/amused/charmed by these fabric designs.
 

Latest ICAD

Another group of ICAD (Index Card A Day) I've made from the last week or so.

Sometimes it's just clear colors that I pick up and use.

I like the interesting texture on this one.

An odd combination of collage and other media.

And sometimes it's browns and greens and yellows that get used.

These are very doodle-rific. 

Burning burning burning

Back To The Village

On to another thing on my monthly to-do list, the Japanese Houses quilt. This was a project I started last year, prompted by the Sewtopia sew-a-long using the Village pattern from Moda.

Confession: the super cute logo got me.

Cats don't like playing violins apparently.

Don't forget your Susi Roll. 

Possibly my favorite house so far. That word/phrase fabric is so bonkers.

I just made 8 more blocks and sewed them together into the fifth row there on the bottom. There is one block made with the blue background, the rest made with the grey. Unfortunately I can't find the three fabrics I'd chosen for the background because of course I put all my fabric away, sigh. But I have a lot of pieces already cut out of the grey so I'm working with those until I can put my hands on the fabrics. 

 

Faux Goose Chased

Another finish, the Faux Goose Chase quilt is now done. The black print binding was made and wound up on the Binding Baby spool and ready to go.

And there it is! I'm really pleased with how it turned out. 

Now to wash it and hope the orange dye bleed in a couple spots comes out. Color Catchers let's go!

Not terribly exciting quilting, but you wouldn’t have been able to see it with all the wild and crazy going on.

The good old walking foot did the trick. Sometimes I fuss about having to change feet, but it’s always worth it.

 All quilted! And now to make some binding, likely a mostly black, b/w print.

Steamy Fresh

Got the backing together for the Faux Goose Chase and spent a steamy half hour with the iron and fusible batting.

 The fusible batting really works well, I love not having to remove pins as I quilt. Now I'm ready to start in on getting the quilting done. I think I'll keep the quilting design pretty simple as this is such a wild n' crazy quilt top to begin with.

Another Week (or so) of ICAD

This week (or so) worth of ICAD work really varies a lot one from the other. Many times I'm influenced by what I'm listening to, in this case the most recent podcast episode of Amicus (all about the most recent Supreme Court term). I found it to be somewhat hopeful, and also rather dark and grim.

Amazing how using a ruler to draw lines changes the look of a thing.

I like the depth of this one.

Color catcher again. They're a really nice texture to work with and soak up pen ink very nicely.
